About Our Soap

Before there were large discount and drug stores on every corner, people made their own soap. Our soap at Grayson County Soap Company is made very similarly to the way soap was made 100 years ago in these mountains. Oil and sodium hydroxide (lye) are carefully combined and poured into wooden molds. After 24 to 48 hours, we remove the mold and hand cut the soap. The soap then cures for 3 to 4 weeks before it is hard enough to use. Handcrafted soap retains natural glycerin which can help skin stay soft and moisturized. Most soap sold in grocery and discount stores is mass-produced and the glycerin is removed and used in more expensive products. So the “soap” is actually just a detergent. We use only high quality, food grade vegetable oils. These include olive oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and palm oil. Shea butter is added for extra richness. We also add wonderful fragrances and essential oils to make your bath time more enjoyable. Because we hand cut and wrap each bar of soap, there may be some irregularities in shape and size.
